How Long Does a C-Section Take?

A c-section is a surgical delivery through an incision in the abdomen and uterus. If you're scheduled for one, or think you might need one, knowing roughly what to expect on the day can make the whole experience feel less daunting.

The honest answer is: it depends. But here's a clear breakdown of what typically happens and how long each stage takes.

The surgery itself: around 45–60 minutes

From the first incision to delivery, most c-sections take between 45 minutes and an hour. The actual moment of delivery usually happens within the first 10–15 minutes. The remainder of that time is spent carefully closing the incision in layers.

Add in pre-operative preparation and anaesthesia, and you're typically in the operating room for closer to 1.5–2 hours in total.

What affects how long it takes

A few things can shorten or extend that window.

Planned vs. emergency. A planned c-section runs to a schedule. The team is prepared, the room is ready, and everything happens methodically. An emergency c-section moves faster by necessity, as the priority shifts to speed of delivery.

Your medical history. Previous abdominal surgery, scar tissue, or complications during the procedure can add time. Your surgeon will have accounted for this in their planning.

Anaesthesia. Most c-sections use a spinal or epidural block, which takes effect quickly. In emergencies, general anaesthesia may be used instead. Either way, the team won't proceed until you're fully comfortable and ready.

After delivery

Once your baby is born, the work isn't over. Suturing the incision, monitoring your vitals, and initial checks on your baby all take place before you leave the operating room. This post-delivery stage typically adds another 45 minutes to an hour.

What to focus on

The timeline matters less than you might think on the day itself. What most parents say afterwards is that everything happened faster than they expected, and that having a few familiar things ready for when baby arrives made those first hours feel calmer.

A satin muslin comforter is one of those things worth having washed and ready before you go in. Many parents find their little one takes to it from the very first days, and having that comfort object established early makes the transition home that much smoother.
